We find a nesting site, build a nest then protect it with our lives. Red-knobbed coot will go to great lengths to rear their young chasing goose, duck or any other that ventures too close!
Sharing parenting these two feed and protect like a trojan for the next weeks. One always watching the young while the other being omnivore will raid other nest eggs or small live prey, also slurp some water weeds for balanced diet.
Dark yet strange side to this bird, it's behaviour is aggressive toward it's own young making it difficult to survive to adulthood. Species is known to fight in a nest till one is killed the other gets all the food to ensure survival of the strongest.
Rainbird Liquid Note
Before a storm approaches the Rainbird to burst into a warbling liquid song, ringing in the storm clouds heralding them on, you know rain is arriving if you hear the song.
Always sounds funny that they are referred to as shy birds, at the end of day have seen them in bushlands where they rule seldom flying off or hiding as they do here in the garden display.
Tenacious tough guys that are carnivorous, consuming a great variety of prey ranging from small mammals, birds, eggs, reptiles they even take a bit of fruit from time to time.
Whether shy or not to me he is a rascal, scared of little, always brings a shiver hearing bubbling call, something to smile about the rain will or has arrived.
