Last Dance With Zero

Prohibition on alcohol and tobacco here in South Africa from 26th March, alcohol only lifted beginning of June, so what is the fuss about now you may ask. 100 years ago the lesson in Prohibition should have been learned watching what happened in the USA back then...

People never take kindly being told how to live, bootlegging took off, I think Pineapple Beer was a hit with many (scam artists, weird brew deaths included) illegal sales on both soared.

Government turned their backs on taxes, ruling instead what WHO justified this, the only country undergoing such stringent rules.

Might have triggered some reaction that more will now go out to source their favourite tipple or find tobacco products by paying higher prices or bartering to obtain.

Currently we are able to buy alcohol from Monday to Thursday between 9am and 5pm now, just don't plan on having a meal out enjoying a bottle of wine, sales are only for at home consumption, crippling restaurant and sports bar businesses around the country.

Over the counter sales on tobacco products is still banned, but these can be exported.... Where there is smoke there is fire!

Last day before able to get my regular beers I had one Zero and one normal beer specially saved to drink on the very last night of ban, here is my take on these two beers, going forward I will be tasting different beers for the sheer enjoyment of being able to do so, never take anything for granted in life again!

Bavaria Premium Original Non alcoholic malt drink made in Holland, not bad in taste, it poured with a reasonable head to crown a zero alcohol beer, the least one could do is enjoy a sun-downer legally after the regular beers had run dry.

Generally I would not go out of my way to buy 0,0% beer, this may be the only six pack ever puchased out of necessity, so I made the most of them. Tried and tested, now I will leave them on the shelf for those who do not enjoy a lager, draft, pilsner, ale or light beer.

Notties Draught Pye-Eyed Possum sat and winked at me each time I opened the fridge door, yup you will wait for a celebratory drink at the end of all this kak (crap) not selling alcohol.

Wait we did on Sunday night 31st May 2020 I cracked this open at 19h00 to enjoy each sip of full flavour this pilsner had to offer.

Crisp and dry, a good head on pouring, this beer gave what was promised with ABV 4.6% IBU: 30.

It took months of careful fermentation and maturation to bring this excellent bottle of Pye-Eyed Possum to you. So delight in the rich, slightly bitter flavour and the noble hop’s bouquet. Designed for serious beer drinkers, this delectable pilsner is fairly high in alcohol, which means that only a few bottles might make you a bit unsteady on your feet. But don’t worry – should you find yourself unexpectedly horizontal, simply tell your friends that you’re playing Possum. Nottingham Road Brewery

Perhaps ones endorphins go up a notch or two in anticipation, knowing the very next day you will don your mask and gloves, get your temperature taken and enter a bottlestore to source your beers and wine, believe you me there was much excitement on the pavement waiting to go in. South Africans in larger cities has music playing stood in long queues dancing and being jovial for the first time in months.
