Last Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox made history playing the longest baseball game in history. By Sunday, the World Series was won by Boston. Monday, baseball season was officially over and even Big Boy Bob had his jersey taken off.
My student's family asked last week who I was rooting for. I'm from Boston living in Los Angeles and just wanted good games. The 18 inning game marking history was perfect. I watched the game live through Facebook of all places. Someone placed their phone in front of their television to share the game. Hundreds of fans for both teams gathered in a virtual living room. Our host was entertained by his guests who toasted to his generosity in the chat.
From my friends in Boston, I heard they kept the bars open to the very end, serving tea. The 18 inning game ended after 12:30am Los Angeles time with a Dodger win and a collective sigh. Everyone went to bed happy and amazed.
That historical Friday night game as well as the season seems to have faded dramatically fast after losing Sunday's game and the World Series. What chatter that is left is about firing the manager.
There's a lot of sour grapes.
All I can think of is that an amazing game happened that won't ever happen again. When will the next 18 inning game happen? Would I feel as sore if I hadn't come from Boston?
I hope this cloud over Los Angeles clears up soon.
