The great night.

The faint light of the moon enters in the room delicately. The night moves forward and so we should do it as well. I gently inhale the toxic cigarette that I hold between my fingers, letting its heat fill my lungs. We have waited for months for this night to come and now that the time is running against us we are not ready yet. Alejandro and I look at each other in the eyes; we both know we are running out of time but we try to ignore the matter and distract ourselves during the wait.

“How long can she take to get ready?” – He finally decides to break the silence while he looks up at the ceiling and tightens his teeth impatiently.

“I don’t have a clue. She should have been ready hours ago. Tonight is the night.”

“Maybe she didn’t remember. We should continue without her.” – He answers mischievously knowing the imminent failure of our plan if Amanda does not come with us. The whole operation depends on her and now we can’t contact her.

“Do as you wish.” – I answer before filling myself again with smoke.

We hear a noise on the other side of the wall. The manager if the business next to our bar is closing the store to get home. Trying to make the waiting more pleasant, I serve a couple of drinks for Alejandro and myself. It’s amazing to think that I closed the bar tonight and now our plan is not paying off. The decisive moment after weeks of preparation is being spoiled by an immature 19 years old teenager.

“I am going to kill her if she doesn’t deign to appear.” – A nervous Alejandro comments while observing at the bottom of his already empty glass.

“Assuming that she is not dead yet.” – I smile as the words escape my mouth. He grimaces at the thought that all our waiting is in vain.

I glance at the large bag my pal is carrying. Amanda asked him to bring the best quality equipment available. Any obstacle that we might face tonight should be able to be overcome with the tools that we have there. In the complete silence of the night, footsteps are heard behind the door. Due to the peculiar sound, we guest that a pair of high heels approaches our entrance. Then the doorbell rings.

“Who is there?” – I ask the figure on the other side of the oak door.

Silence. Not the creak of the wood nor the tinkling of ice nor the breathing of my companion. Nothing sounds tonight. A deep metallic noise breaks the silence. A burst of shots goes through the entrance, tearing away our lives from us. The bullet casings sound as they hit the concrete, marking a death sentence for both of us.

In spite of everything, the operation has been a success.
