The round gray circles are magnets that came with a magnetic hoop that I bought separately from the machine. It simplifies the process of hooping with the standard hoop that comes with the machine, especially for thicker fabrics or items. I never thought about knitting or crocheting a mug rug. It is small enough to use up leftover skeins of yarn and not too time consuming. Great idea!
