The same thing happened in my school days: few of us owned cars, and hardly any children went to school by car; most of us took the bus.
As you mentioned, back then we were respectful; we would give up our seat to someone older than us.
Unfortunately, those values have been lost; it's sad to admit.
As for the bus service in my city, it's depressing; the cost is exorbitant, $2 for a fifteen-minute ride, and the delays can take up to an hour.
Argentina is a topsy-turvy world.
