"A sick man is known by the appearance of his skin and a forgotten town by the appearance of its façades"... I heard the chronicler of our town say this phrase once. I don't really remember if those were exactly the words he used, but I am sure that this is what he meant, which is also an assertion I agree with.

"Se conoce al hombre enfermo por el aspecto de su piel y al pueblo olvidado por el de sus fachadas"... Esta frase se la escuché decir al cronista de nuestro pueblo alguna vez. En realidad no recuerdo si esas eran exactamente las palabras que utilizó, pero sí que estoy seguro de que eso era lo que el quería decir, la cual es además una aseveración la cual comparto.

But beyond the undoubted shortcomings and problems that the town's ragged facades betray, there is no denying that many of them have an overwhelming chromaticism, charged with fabulous drama and therefore an ideal subject for photography.

Pero mucho más allá de las indudables carencias y problemas que delatan las fachadas harapientas del pueblo, no se puede negar que en muchas de ellas hay un cromatismo sobrecogedor, cargado de fabuloso drama y por ende un objetivo ideal para fotografiar.

These filthy, peeling walls, brimming with slovenliness and decay; they often have their sounds too. Many of them are surrounded by the cries of children, cursing mothers, mumbling drunks and some horrendous sound of what they now call music. The facades are as tawdry as they are sad, or go from one extreme to the other depending on the time of day you approach them.

Estas paredes sucias, descascaradas y rebosantes en desidia y decadencia; también suelen tener sonidos. Muchas de ellas están rodeadas de llantos de niños, de madres maldicientes, de borrachos mascullando y de algún sonido horroroso de esos que ahora suelen llamar música. Son fachadas tan chabacanas como tristes, o van de uno a otro extremo según la hora del día en la uno se les acerque.

There is something "picassoesque" about these surfaces deteriorating as time imposes itself on them. If I hadn't seen them becoming what they are, then I would swear that some kind of eccentric and mildly mad artist has created them step by step.

Hay algo de "picassiano" en estas superficies deteriorándose al paso que el tiempo se los impone. Sí no les hubiese visto ir convirtiéndose en lo que son, entonces juraría que algún tipo de artista excéntrico y medianamente loco las ha ido creado paso a paso.

In fact, there is so much to record in these almost dead facades that I feel it is necessary and obviously propitious to go street by street and record details even closer, I think a 35mm or 50mm focal length would be excellent for this. So the intention would be perhaps to capture the chromaticism and chaos more closely, as I am sure that there are planes that are like abstract paintings which escape me due to my particular habit of photographing them in relatively open planes. But that will be material for another work, for now it is only in my mind.

De hecho, hay tanto para registrar en estas fachadas casi muertas que, se me antoja necesario y obviamente propicio, el irme calle por calle y registrar detalles aún más de cerca, creo que para esto sería excelente una focal de 35mm o 50mm. Entonces la intención sería quizás captar el cromatismo y el caos más de cerca, pues estoy seguro de que hay planos que son como pinturas abstractas los cuales se me escapan debido a mi particular costumbre de fotografiarlas en planos relativamente abiertos. Pero eso será material para otro trabajo, por ahora solo está en mi mente.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.

NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografiar capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.
