Victoria Memorial Kolkata: An iconic marble structure from the British era
One of the tourist attractions of Kolkata is the Victoria Memorial Hall. It was built to commemorate the Empress of India, Queen Victoria. There are no more epic structures like this in Kolkata. Currently, this memorial hall is used as a memorial museum of the British rule in India.
Queen Victoria died in 1901 at the age of 94. He ruled the British Empire for 63 years. Then the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, planned to build a monument to commemorate Queen Victoria, who ruled the British Empire for so long.
The Victoria Memorial is designed in a colonial architectural style, but the building has traces of Mughal and Islamic architecture. The building has Italian style statues, Mughal style domes, use of white marble, use of Taj Mahal style architecture etc. A coincidental similarity between the Taj Mahal and the Victoria Memorial Hall is that the two structures were built to commemorate two empresses.
Sir William Emerson designed the original structure of the Victoria Memorial, which was modeled after Belfast City Hall in Northern Ireland. The construction of the memorial was entrusted to Messrs. Martin & Company of Calcutta. The work of this establishment was started under the leadership of Lord Curzon. This memorial hall was inaugurated by King Edward VIII in 1921.
Victoria Memorial has many galleries for tourists. Queens is the center of attraction for all, as many of the Queen's memorabilia are preserved here. Besides, there are many signs of British rule here. The Victoria Memorial is very interesting to see because white marble stone was used for its construction.
