you almost said it
your throat buzzed / your lip twitched
but you swallowed it again
like every other almost
now it festers behind your tongue

the silence aged poorly
fermented into guilt
carbonated with panic
a bottle you won’t open / but can’t throw away

zippy kept the receipt
of that night
of that look
of that pause-too-long
your silence was louder than any sorry

don’t pretend they didn’t notice
they archived your pause
in their memory
under “things that never healed”

words rot when unsaid
they leak / they mold / they echo
you don’t need a microphone
you need nerve

next time the sentence rises
don’t exhale it into fog
say it
before i do
