Garments Industries of Bangladesh

The Garments industries of Bangladesh have been part of the trade versus aid debate. The Garments and clothing Industries provide the single source of growth in Bangladesh’s rapidly developing economy. The importance of industrial development as an engine of Bangladesh’s economic growth is also reinforced by a growing realization that the development of agriculture sector, one of the mainstays of the country’s economy, critically hinges on its backward and forward linkage with the industrial sector.


History of Garments Industries in Bangladesh

Under Mughal rule, Bengal Subah was a midpoint of the worldwide muslin and silk trades during 16th to 18th centuries. Mughal era, the most important center of cotton production was Bengal, particularly around its capital city of Dhaka, leading to muslin being called daka in distant markets such as center Asia. After the independence in 1971, Bangladesh was one of poorest countries in the world. No major industries were developed in Bangladesh, when it was known as East Pakistan. The Garment industry in Bangladesh has been expanded almost uninterruptedly since the late 1970s. It survived Multi-Fiber. Arrangement phase out at the end of 2004, and remains internationally competitive to date.
