Greetings;
Welcome to my blog. Today i want to share with an important and pressing matter that i think we need to look into. Its slowly killing us here in Africa but we do not know or we knowly choose to ignore it. The rate at which we disseminate and destroy the soil is very alarming. I say this because i help my father out in farming so i do see the effects these things and i want to use this opportunity to address them.
Over here in Africa, some people have found joy in setting fire to bushes. On serval occasions i have personaly seen and questioned people on why they indulge in that act. And most of the answers i get are they are hunting for bush animals. And the funny thing almost all of them are not educated and they know nothing of the harm they are causing to the soil. It might not seem like they are doing something harmful. But trust me they are. Because later on when farmers come to cultivate on the land, they dont get any yield because the fire would have burnt all the nutrients away.
Another way we destroye our own land is by of laziness. Why do i say this?… i say this because most people particularly farmers have the habit of using harmful chemicals to clear thier farms before cultivating on it. Instead of using the other organic ways, like using a tractor to till the land, they opt to use easir ways that will their job way easier and also save some money. However what they choose to ignore is that these chemicals contain harmful substances that kill the nutrients in the soil.
Over grazing, this is mostly common in my country. The heardsmen would mostly take thier cattle out for grazing. Instead of them to constantly rotating the places the cattles feed on, they make them feed on one particular place untill the land becomes bare. This then exposes the land to direct sun rays, strong winds that cause erosion and many more.
These are just but a few of the activities that we do that hinders on the return on our crop production. I believe that if we were to change our ways, properly educate those who dont know. And try to reason with them and tell them the effects of what they are doing. And hopefully they change. I felt like this is the right time to blog about this because we are about entering into the raining season and we will soon start cultivating our crops. In other to get a better yield, we must protect our soil. Thank you.
