If you're ever traveling between northern and southern California, consider taking the scenic Highway 1. It's adds about 2 hours to the total travel time, but the views along the way are definitely worth it.
One notorious spot is Big Sur. With the ocean on one side and redwood forest on the other, the area is filled with stunning scenery. If you're timing is right, you might be able to see migrating grey whales too!
