Having the ability to cope with extreme situations, or in other words, being able to face painful moments or very strong adversities, does not mean that we can ignore an imminent disaster, whether in business, personal challenges or even in our daily lives.
In certain cultures it is very common expressions that mention "Writing on the wall" or "Reading what is written on the wall"... Which tries to express, how evident it can be a bad result according to our behavior?
The original source of these expressions comes from a biblical account, specifically from the "Book of Daniel" where we can read the story of the fall of Babylon.
This story tells how a king of Babylon was present, (at a banquet he gave), as a hand wrote on the wall of the palace a few words that he himself could not understand, immediately requested the presence of his advisors (Magi and fortune tellers) but none of them knew how to interpret what was written on the wall. Then the king sent for Daniel. Who had been raised by King Nebuchadnezzar, and asked him if he could read what was written on the wall, mentioning that it would reward him, Daniel explained the meaning of those words but did not accept any reward.
The writing communicated to the king that God would not tolerate the transgressions of this, to invade the temple of Solomon and use it to give a feast, in which were used the cups and sacred vessels of the temple to offer and praise their pagan gods, so he decreed the end of his reign in those lands.
That same night the king was assassinated and his empire was divided...
It is well known that in many parts of the world companies, banks, giant corporations have gone bankrupt because their directors have been very stubborn or have simply failed to interpret the signs or tendencies that would lead them to bankruptcy. Many times these signs are so evident that they have been warned by their colleagues and even subordinates and only they could not see them.
Why do so many people ignore the writing on the wall?
Perhaps we can define several reasons and they are very valid, but the most prominent is the denial...
"The time to face denial is right now,
this very day. Don't expect a crisis. It will be too much late."
Richard Tedlow, author, Negation (Denial).
Most people find it difficult to face denial, and this is part of our daily lives, just pay attention to our actions and the people around us and in a short time we can appreciate it, both individually and in social groups, we see what we want to see, which is usually not the real reality but what suits us.
By paying attention to these trends, we will be able to identify two groups of people in difficult situations; the first are those who can see the risks in certain situations and manage to escape from a disaster and those who break or sink into failure, which is usually a large majority.
Keep in mind that it is not enough to know that a debacle is approaching; the most important thing is to know how to face it or avoid it.
