August is a month of water and Guanare is a small city, but with areas of excellent vegetation for hiking; I had not been encouraged because I have spent the last few months locked in my library, giving courses, writing and reading, and I was just reviewing a book of the Roman emperors when I came across a phrase of Octavian Augustus, (to whom, by the way, is due the name of August) and the phrase was, "Hurry with calm".

The phrase made me think about the routine of the days, how sometimes we want to get out of it and we don't find the way or we cover the possibilities with more buts and so the years go by and when we realize it (if we realize it at all) we are dead in life, sedentary automatons that consume bread and water while life waits with so many possibilities to make it different.

"Hurry calmly", I began to repeat, softly, as if to taste the flavor of the phrase; then the repetition was more impulsive, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry... second after came the calm and then I made a space in my morning of classes, books and writing and here I am, telling what was the experience of retaking the contact with nature.

A walk to meet people, to breathe fresh air, to change the environment, to give a twist to the routine because life does not wait for us; it is there, in every dawn, in every new darkness and with everything that happens between day and night and between night and day; and it is there, in that uninterrupted span of twenty-four hours, where we laugh and cry, where we fall and take flight, where we build bridges or stand still waiting for a train that does not have to arrive, because it turns out that sometimes the way must be done on foot, because the one that does arrive is time and it does so to devour us, with its unperturbed meekness, but punctual, certain, from which we only react when we can no longer run, jump or bend our hips; when we look at ourselves in the mirror and see the furrows on our foreheads and feel the sharp edge that buries the deadly axe of the days, until we run out of starry nights because we can no longer see them, because from under the earth nothing looks beautiful.

But it turns out that to feel that life is more than just getting up, eating and sleeping there is nature, the pure air, the birds singing, the variety of vegetation, the rhythm of the relief; enjoying all this is beneficial for health, for the mind and, above all, for the spirit, because from this communion between man and his natural environment comes his inner peace, his desire to be well and his sense of respect for life in all its forms.
