Greetings friends, today I want to share with you a topic that has come to my mind in a special way this day and that I consider that for various circumstances we can lose sight of in the midst of our daily lives, but that is of vital importance for our personal development. Sometimes we tend to get carried away so much by appearances, by what others say or think, which ends up causing us an inner discomfort of such proportions that we are constantly worried.

If we look at things from a philosophical point of view we can find thinkers like Parmenides, who among other things told us that the senses deceive us, that what exists are mere appearances and that for this reason we should not let ourselves be carried away so naively by external things, but go deeper into them. Therefore, this philosopher is one of the first to motivate us to think seriously more in the "being" than in the appearance, so beyond his particular thought is to highlight this contribution to the history of philosophy.

And I bring this up because it expresses what I want to make clear in this post, and that is that in the path of our life what defines us is what we are inside, not what others can manifest about us, because - unless they go deeper - they will always remain in appearances. That is why one of my maxims is *"What your conscience says about you is more important than what others say.

On the other hand, from a more psychological point of view, not paying due care to our being, what we carry inside, because we are more attentive to the exterior, that is, to what appears, the apparent, the appearance, is not only not good for our mental health, but in the end it is a damage that we do to ourselves.

The reason is that even though we can deceive others, there is someone we can never deceive, and that someone is "our self". Others may be more or less impressed by our masks, but we know who is really behind it. Moreover, there may come a time when others discover us and we continue under a performance that after all has already been unveiled, but that because of the nonconformity with what we are makes us live in a "self-deception".

The practical manifestation of this is given in different ways, the most common is perhaps hypocrisy or as we say more commonly "being a double-faced person" or maybe more than two, ha, ha, ha, ha, because it does not end up showing what it really is, when what really frees us and fills us is to show us really how we are, in simplicity and honesty. That is why this issue of being and appearing is of vital importance, perhaps even more so today, when the various advances make us take more care of our appearance without considering our inner self in equal measure.

The last line of the previous paragraph has been written with total deliberation to give way to a final reflection on what we have said so far and that is that I do not advocate that we do not take care of our exterior, what we appear or manifest to others, appearances after all, but that in the same way that we take care of the external we also take care of our interior.

We could go even further and affirm that it is very valuable that everything that we manifest on the outside of us is as true a reflection as possible of what we carry inside. For example, to do a favor not simply out of interest, but because we really want to do good, to be kind because it is part of our being and not just out of obligation, to smile not just to look good, but for the joy of living, and so on.

Life, in conclusion, is a pendulum between being and appearing, finding the balance between both aspects is the challenge we have. It is important what appears, because it is what we show and how we show it, but it is also what we carry inside us, since it is what will give strength and consistency to everything we do.
