I find that approach to spy novels incredibly interesting, where the tension doesn't come from explosions, but from silence and psychology; it sounds much deeper and more unsettling than the typical fare in the genre. The line you quoted about the mask is brutal; it really makes you think about the theme of identity and what these people sacrifice. And by the way, what a great project restoring that old copy! I feel like holding such a well-worn copy adds even more character to the reading experience. Thanks for the recommendation, I'm adding it to my list!
