If brakes produce smoke after landing and/or Brake Temp amber light (as installed) is illuminated or the Brake Temperature Monitoring System (as installed) indicates a brake temperature of 5 units or more :
- Advise ATC and request fire brigade near the aircraft
- Delay refueling and lead away the fuel truck
- Set wheel chocks and release the parking brakes
- Consider passenger disembarkation or evacuation
- Never touch the brakes with your bare hands!
- Maintain a safe distance of about 6 meters / 20 feet
As a general rule, brake temperature at ten minutes after landing should be at or below 90 degrees C / 195 degrees F (max landing weight - ISA) The fire brigade has an infrared thermometer gun to measure brake temperature from a short distance, Do not spray water on the brakes, this may cause damage to the componets. Instead, use air blowers.
Verify the FPPM - PI [Advisory Info - Recommeded Brake Cooling Schedule] prior to your next departure.
If the brakes are smoking but brake temperature is within limits, suspect too much grease on the wheel axie or hydraulic fluid contamination. Call maintenance for inspection or verify the ATL for a recent entry on wheel servicing.
