El día de ayer volví a ver la película de Carrie la versión de 2013 después de mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, como ya me he visto varias de las adaptaciones de este espectacular libro de Stephen King el cual leí hace un tiempo, me dije a mí misma es momento de hacer un post enfocado en por qué, para mí, el libro es infinitamente superior a cualquier versión que ha sacado Hollywood. Yesterday, I rewatched the 2013 movie adaptation of Carrie after quite a while. However, having seen several film adaptations of this spectacular Stephen King book which I also read a while back I said to myself: it's time to write a post focusing on why, to me, the book is infinitely superior to any version Hollywood has produced. So I hope you really enjoy this post and connect with my love for this incredible book. Let's get started!

Para ponernos un poco en contexto y no perder el hilo, la historia gira en torno a Carrie White, una adolescente marcada por el sufrimiento. Carrie es una chica marginada, no muy agraciada físicamente, con problemas de acné y sobrepeso, lo que la convierte en el blanco perfecto para sufrir un acoso escolar desgarrador y crueles burlas por parte de sus compañeros. Pero su infierno no termina al salir del colegio, en casa vive sometida bajo la sombra de su madre, Margaret, una mujer dominada por un fanatismo religioso extremo y represivo que la maltrata física y psicológicamente. But her nightmare doesn't end at school: at home, she lives under the heavy shadow of her mother, Margaret, an extremely fanatical and repressive religious woman who abuses her physically and mentally. Carrie's life takes a radical turn when, after a deeply traumatic incident at school, she awakens a terrifying latent gift: telekinesis, the ability to move objects and manipulate matter using only her mind. What makes the novel so captivating is watching how this tormented, repressed girl realizes that an enormous power lives within her—one she gradually learns to command, as tension in the town of Chamberlain builds toward a tragic and inevitable climax .

Entrando en materia de por qué considero que el libro es infinitamente superior a cualquier adaptación cinematográfica, todo se reduce a la profundidad psicológica del personaje. La premisa de Stephen King nos muestra que Carrie no es solo una chica con poderes superpoderosos, es una joven destruida por dentro tras años de sufrir violencia, humillaciones y aislamiento tanto en la escuela como en su propio hogar. En la novela, todo ese contexto sobre su apariencia física, el rechazo constante y la opresión de su madre se siente brutalmente real. Ese dolor acumulado es la verdadera gasolina de la historia, no se trata de magia sin sentido, sino de una rabia pura, un odio y un desprecio reprimidos que terminan explotando. Carrie necesita expulsar todo ese sufrimiento y buscar venganza contra un entorno que destruyó su vida. El libro te hace sentir esa furia en cada página de una forma visceral que el cine jamás ha logrado transmitir con la misma fuerza. Es un análisis increíble sobre cómo el acoso extremo puede empujar a una persona al límite absoluto.

Getting into why I consider the book infinitely superior to any film adaptation, it all comes down to the character's psychological depth. Stephen King's premise shows us that Carrie isn't just a girl with extraordinary powers; she is a young woman completely shattered inside after years of suffering violence, humiliation, and isolation both at school and at home. In the novel, all that background surrounding her physical appearance, constant rejection, and her mother's oppression feels brutally real. That accumulated pain is the true fuel of the story: it's not just meaningless supernatural power, but pure rage, a repressed hatred and resentment that eventually explodes. Carrie desperately needs to unleash all that suffering and seek revenge against an environment that ruined her life. The book makes you feel that fury on every single page in a visceral way that cinema has never managed to capture with the same intensity. It's a powerful look at how extreme bullying can push someone to the absolute brink.

Ojo, con esto no quiero decir que las películas sean malas, como entretenimiento funcionan bastante bien y son divertidas de ver. Sin embargo, me entregan una premisa completamente opuesta a lo que el libro realmente busca transmitir. La obra de King es una genialidad desgarradora sobre lo que el odio, la discriminación y la crueldad constante pueden llegar a hacerle a la psique de un ser humano, empujándolo a consecuencias extremas. Y justo aquí es donde las adaptaciones me dejaron totalmente insatisfecha. En la novela, Stephen King es súper descriptivo y nos deja claro por qué el entorno detesta tanto a Carrie, es una chica sin gracia física, con sobrepeso, marcas de acné y una postura encorvada por estar todo el tiempo encogida por el miedo y la humillación. Su apariencia física es el detonante principal de esa violencia sistemática. En cambio, Hollywood cometió el enorme error de caer en el cliché barato de "patito feo que en realidad es una súper modelo" al elegir a actrices hegemónicamente bellas .

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the movies are awful; as pure entertainment, they work fine and are fun to watch. However, they deliver a premise that is completely opposite to what the book actually tries to convey. King's novel is a heartbreaking masterpiece about what hatred, discrimination, and non-stop cruelty can do to a person's psyche, driving them to absolute extremes. And right here is where all the film adaptations fell completely short for me. In the book, Stephen King is extremely descriptive and makes it crystal clear why everyone hates Carrie so much: she is an unattractive girl, overweight, with severe acne, and a posture hunched over from years of living in fear and shame. Her physical appearance is the primary trigger for that systematic abuse. Instead, Hollywood made the massive mistake of falling into the cheap "ugly duckling who is actually a supermodel" trope by casting conventionally gorgeous actresses .

Esta decisión de casting revela un problema gigantesco, la gordofobia arraigada en las producciones cinematográficas de Hollywood. Ninguna de las adaptaciones se atrevió a plasmar verdaderamente la apariencia física de Carrie tal como está escrita en el libro. Al suavizar la apariencia de Carrie por gordofobia y por complacer a la industria, el cine destruye la base del conflicto y reduce una crítica social profunda a un simple drama juvenil predecible.

This casting decision reveals a massive issue: the fatphobia deeply rooted in Hollywood film productions. None of the adaptations ever dared to truly reflect Carrie's physical appearance as written in the book. They chose to erase her weight and her lack of aesthetic grace out of fear of putting a lead character on screen who doesn't fit conventional beauty standards. It makes zero sense for a movie to simply mess up a gorgeous actress's hair, strip off her makeup, and dress her in oversized clothes to convince us she's rejected for being "ugly." She is still objectively beautiful, and that completely destroys the narrative weight of the story. Why would a group of popular teenagers brutally target a girl who is conventionally attractive? The logic completely falls apart. By glossing over Carrie's real appearance out of fatphobia and a desire to please the industry, cinema ruins the core of the conflict, turning a profound social critique into a predictable teen drama.

In the movies, Carrie's revenge seems almost entirely restricted to the high school gymnasium and a couple of street scenes. In the book, it's a colossal massacre! Driven by pure hatred, visceral contempt, and an unquenchable thirst for vengeance after a lifetime of abuse, Carrie doesn't just destroy prom night: she unleashes pure hell upon the entire town of Chamberlain. She blows up gas stations, causes massive citywide fires, downs power lines, and rains her telekinetic fury on the general population, killing hundreds of people. The book depicts the true transformation of a repressed girl into an unstoppable, terrifying force of nature—something cinema drastically downscaled into a mere high school dispute, far too small for the magnitude of her pain.

Lo más brillante de leer Carrie es la experiencia inmersiva que te ofrece Stephen King, sientes que formas parte de ese entorno, te adentras en su mente y te ves forzada a cuestionar por qué ocurría tanto desprecio. La crueldad y la ruindad que se describen en la novela son tan viscerales que llegan a provocar náuseas. No estamos hablando solo de un "libro fino" de terror; es una obra que expone sin filtros lo más oscuro de la naturaleza humana y cómo se destruye sistemáticamente la psique de una persona. La ciencia ficción y la telequinesis son solo herramientas narrativas para amplificar un mensaje social aterrador y real. Lamentablemente, Hollywood prefirió infantilizar la historia, convirtiéndola en un simple drama adolescente de preparatoria y quitándole todo el peso emocional y psicológico. Por eso el libro es infinitamente superior, es una lectura a la que siempre volverás para cuestionar cómo nuestras acciones pueden destruir de forma irreversible la vida de alguien mentalmente inestable.

The most brilliant aspect of reading Carrie is the immersive experience Stephen King offers: you feel like you're part of that environment, stepping inside her mind and forcing yourself to question why so much contempt existed. The cruelty and viciousness described in the novel are so visceral they literally make you feel sick. We aren't just talking about a "cool horror book"; it's a story that unfiltered exposes the darkest sides of human nature and how a person's psyche can be systematically destroyed. The sci-fi element and telekinesis are merely narrative tools used to amplify a terrifying, real-world social message. Regrettably, Hollywood chose to infantilize the story, turning it into a shallow high school teen drama and stripping away all of its emotional and psychological weight. That is why the book is infinitely superior: it's a story you will always return to in order to question how our actions can irreversibly ruin the life of someone who is mentally fragile.

Además, la historia nos deja una lección enorme sobre las apariencias físicas y la empatía. En el mundo real existe una inmensa diversidad de cuerpos, razas, texturas y realidades, y la novela nos enfrenta a la responsabilidad de lo que nuestras acciones provocan en los demás. Nuestras palabras o el rechazo que ejercemos pueden llegar a destruirle la vida a una persona vulnerable. Poder traerles esta crítica y compartir mi punto de vista desde lo que me hizo sentir el texto frente a la pantalla ha sido una experiencia increíble.

Furthermore, the story leaves us with a massive lesson regarding physical appearances and empathy. In the real world, there is an immense diversity of bodies, races, traits, and backgrounds, and the novel forces us to confront the heavy responsibility of what our actions cause in others. Our words or the rejection we inflict can ruin the life of a vulnerable person. Being able to bring you this post and share my perspective on what the text made me feel versus the screen has been an incredible experience.
