Correct Pressures

The importance of having the correct tyre pressure should not be forgotten, and checking the tyres should not be delayed. If your tyres a visibly down on air then it has been too long between checks. I remember learning the importance of tyre pressures a numbers of years back when I was ridding motorcycles.

I went to the bike, did a quick check around the bike and thought, hmm tyres seem a bit low, they'll be alright, I'll top them up at the petrol station near home. After the first corner, I made a detour to the nearest petrol station and put air in. The effect of low tyre pressure is very, very, noticeable when you only have two tyres. The bike was squirmy, didn't handle, didn't go where I pointed it. I.e. no fun.

A car will also display similar issues but not quite as noticeable, also much harder to spot on a car visually. Some people will intentionally run low pressure because the rides "feels" smoother. This is a very bad idea as you have less rubber on the road, and hence less grip.

Just imagine what less rubber on the road can mean if you need to stop in a hurry, in the wet. Time for a slide. Never mind having to replace your tyres that much sooner.
