How do you steal $600 Million

An action movie from 1988, back when Bruce Willis had some hair. It shows what Hollywood can do, and do do quite well. A lot of action, special effects, and some humour which Hollywood doesn't always get right. They did in Die Hard, thankfully.

During the silly season, we have John McClane arriving to visit his wife (Holly) at her work Christmas party which is being held at work, at the Nakatomi corporation. As it is Christmas eve the building is empty, plus it has a few floors still under construction, the top floors. This means that everyone is on a single floor of the building.

Having everyone on the one floor makes it easier for the uninvited guests to take control, and keep everyone together. That is everyone except for one person, John, who also happens to be a cop. The uninvited guests are armed and consist of Hans Gruber the leader, Karl, Tony, Franco, Theo, Alexander, Marco, Kristoff, Eddie, Uli, Heinrich, Fritz, and James.

It turns out that Gruber wants the $600 million in company bonds which are kept in the company safe and he is using a terrorist angle to throw off the authorities. Gruber takes the president of the company and asks for the safe's code. This isn't given so the company president is killed. John was watching and almost gets caught, he sets off a fire alarm in an attempt to alert the authorities to the situation. The thieves are one step ahead, and the fire trucks get turned around.

Now Gruber wants the troublesome individual dealt with and sends Tony after him. John overpowers Tony and takes his radio which he uses to contact the police. The police suspecting a prank caller reluctantly send over Sgt Powell, he is about to dismiss the call until another thief lands on his bonnet. Gruber sent two more men to deal with the situation, one of which ended up on the bonnet of Sgt Powell's car.

So now the authorities are alerted and the LAPD take charge, until the thieves call themselves terrorists to the cops, and demand various freedom fighters released. Now the FBI are in called in and are in control. This however, doesn't appear to be an unexpected or even unwanted development as far as the thieves are concerned.

The FBI order all power to the building shut off, believing that it will put a spanner in the terrorists works. This is something that they needed to occur in order to get past the electromagnetic lock on the safe, and it was something that the thieves couldn't do without the FBI's help.

The terrorists have also requested a helicopter to take them and their hostages to the airport. The FBI are now planning to use gunships to kill the terrorists, and a 20% hostage fatality seems acceptable. Only one issue, the thieves are one step ahead again and have wired the roof of the building with explosives.

John sees the explosives on the roof, and since he has a radio is informed of FBI's plan, only just, never the less he manages to save the hostages, and kill a few more bad guys. Gruber has now discovered that Holly one of the hostages is John's wife and she is used to get John to surrender himself and his machine gun.

John, however has a pistol taped to his back. He manages to kill the last bad guy and wound Gruber, whom grabs Holly's watch as he is knocked back through the window. John manages to undo the strap on the watch and we see Gruber falling to his death.

All told this is a very good action, thriller film from Hollywood. The plot isn't too difficult, good guy versus many bad guys, and since it is Hollywood, the good guys wins.
