There is a lot of trash in today’s Hollywood cinema, though every now and then you can find something worthwhile. That is why I often look for material from elsewhere—films from European or Latin American countries—trying to uncover hidden gems that never made it to theaters in my own country. Most Hollywood films are politically correct; they avoid controversial topics and stick to a predictable narrative. I have seen many recent releases, but none have inspired me to write about them. For instance, I recently watched Run, starring Gal Gadot, and realized that the film was clearly designed to be viewed in a vertical format, on a mobile phone. I put it to the test: I played the movie and covered the left and right sides of the screen with my hands; the entire film, all the action, and every shot featuring the lead actress remained perfectly centered. This is cinema conceived for vertical viewing on mobile devices, and it is causing real harm: it is destroying the beauty of cinematic language.
