The new Coffee Fair in the city

In previous years, the city of Barquisimeto hosted the "Huele a Café" (Smells Like Coffee) event, organized by the municipal government. Now that it's under the jurisdiction of the state government, the first edition of a new event called "Lara es Café" (Lara is Coffee) was held.

To carry out this event, new locations were sought, and the result was to hold it in two spaces: one at La Flor de Venezuela (The Flower of Venezuela) and the other in a small commercial space called San Luis, located behind the gas station across from La Flor de Venezuela.

This post will focus solely on the San Luis area, where most of the major coffee brands were located. I'll tell you everything that happened at La Flor de Venezuela another time. Because both spaces were across the street from each other, and to avoid traffic problems, vehicle circulation in that area was restricted from noon until 10 p.m.

The event lasted three days, from Friday the 12th to Sunday the 14th. I only went twice: on Friday, which was the opening day, and on Saturday. On Sunday, I was too tired, and although I wanted to go, I decided to stay home.

Something I like about these kinds of events is that I can try a lot of coffee, different types and brands, from specialty coffees to coffees from small local businesses. This edition had a large presence of coffee growers from the state. Many coffee growers from the different municipalities that make up the state of Lara had stands with their products.

A lot of people attended. I arrived early and was able to try quite a bit of coffee, but as the hours passed, long lines formed everywhere. On Saturday, I drank a lot more coffee and left feeling very energized, haha.

The competitions took place on Saturdays and Sundays in downtown San Luis. The queens of tourism, culture, sports, and the queen of Lara were present every day. The organization was good, and there was ample security provided by the state police.

I love coffee, so I try to make the most of these events to learn about its cultivation and processing. The difference is noticeable when you taste so-called specialty coffee, whose roasting, grinding, and brewing processes are very carefully controlled. It's a very meticulous technique. The aroma and flavor are completely different; it even has a sweet taste despite not containing added sugar. Very different from the cheap coffee you buy at the supermarket.

In Lara, there are many coffee producers, many artisanal brands that aren't found in the big chains. I don't know how the closing was on Sunday, but the two days I attended were excellent. The downside is that now we have to wait a year for the next edition.
