The origins of the Dark Passenger
Los or铆genes del Oscuro pasajero
I just watched episode 7. There will be ten in total, so it's still airing. I was reluctant to watch this prequel series to the original Dexter. I knew nothing about it until I saw the trailer days before its premiere. At first I thought it was a joke or a fake pilot.
Dexter was an excellent series, whose fourth season was phenomenal, but from then on they stretched it too much and I watched the last few seasons out of inertia. Its ending left me with a bittersweet taste and years later they invented a new season to supposedly give a worthy ending and for me it was worse. That last season with Dexter's son as a teenager, did not leave many people happy, so I thought it would be the definitive end, plus Dexter ended up literally finished by his own blood.
With this Dexter Original Sin, they show us that he is still breathing and they take him to a hospital, this is the excuse for his whole life to happen in front of his eyes and show us when Dexter was a young medical student and how he becomes part of the Miami police forensic team. How he behaved as a young man, the code Harry taught him, his first victims and how he becomes the ruthless killer we all know from the original series.
Was it necessary? That's the question I asked myself when I started watching it. Definitely not. The original series had already shown us, through many flashbacks, how Harry taught him the code that the dark passenger had to abide by to quench his thirst for murder and not get caught. Besides, the important thing is to kill evildoers. No innocents. Only criminals who deserve to be put on the table for Dexter to feel the ecstasy of ending their lives.
驴Era necesario?
The way Dexter killed his victims was my favorite thing about the main series. You have no idea how much I enjoyed that TV show, with Dexter in his suit to avoid getting blood on his face, with his clear mask and a knife in his hand. The victims on the tables and the pictures of the innocents all around. Michael C Hall made this incredible character his own. In this prequel series, it is actor Patrick Gibson who brings the young Dexter to life. Although there is a certain resemblance, at first it is hard to believe him as Dexter, luckily we often hear Michael C Hall's voiceover, as it is Dexter who tells us about his youth.
His mother's story, as a police informant and as the dreaded Dexter under Harry, is shown in more detail. Harry's flashbacks are used for this purpose. Each episode shows something from that past and I found it a bit tedious. What saves the series is seeing the young Dexter killing, making his first mistakes and seeing how the killer is forged. He perfects his technique, just like serial killers do in real life.
All the other characters from the original series are present in their younger version played by younger actors. I got the feeling that they were young people imitating the adult characters. Although they fulfill their role, they don't quite convince me. It was set fifteen years before the Dexter we already knew, and to see that in those fifteen years Masuka, LaGuerta and Batista even dress the same, is not very credible. In fifteen years many things change in a person.
Sarah Michelle Gellar participates in the series as the head of the forensic team and Christian Slater plays Harry. Patrick Dempsey is in charge of giving life to Spencer the police chief. The character of Debra Morgan, Dexter's sister, is played by Molly Brown and I like her work being conflictive, rebellious and unlucky when it comes to choosing a partner.
For those who want to continue enjoying Dexter, this prequel will be entertaining. On the other hand, it is already confirmed that there will be a new season of Dexter with Michel C. Hall back. They will continue to exploit the franchise to the point of boredom.
