We go through life with people telling us the “CORRECT WAY” to do things. Teachers tell us that we need an “EDUCATION” to be successful (whatever that means). Parents tell how to act. The news shapes our opinions on current events. Our peers tell us how to dress, interact and what music we should enjoy. When it really boils down to it the truth is that there has been no aspect you your life that has not been influenced by other people. For the majority of people that is not a problem; however, for the independent thinkers among us (which you probably are if you are reading this article) this is a very sobering idea that is the catalyst to many questions. Who are YOU? What do YOU want from YOUR life? Are you pursuing YOUR DREAMS or the DREAMS of someone else? We all deserve success but will NEVER achieve it if we spend our life mirroring another.
IF YOU WERE GOING TO DIE TOMORROW WOULD YOU BE HAPPY WITH YOUR LIFE
We all think we will have enough time for our dreams later. While a tad depressing, this question forces you to remove time from the equation and make you take a hard look at your relationships, achievements and goals. It forces the honest answer out of us because there simply is no benefit in lying. If you find that you would not be happy with your life at this point than I would recommend making a change. Life is not as long as we all like to believe and you owe it to yourself to have a live we are proud of.
DEFINE WHAT SUCCESS IS TO YOU
Success, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. You will never obtain fulfillment if you cannot define it first. Money will not fulfill the person who wants very rich and rewarding relationships. Inversely, rich and fulfilling relationships may not fulfill the enterprising entrepreneur who wants to dominate the market place. We all have our own idea of paradise. What does yours look like?
MAKE A LIST OF LIFE GOALS
Once you know what success is, how will you obtain it? Make a list of goals for your life and then break those goals up into step-by-step plan. The smaller the increments of time and the more detailed your plan the better. Display this list in a place so that you have no choice but to look at it; this will hold you accountable.
After you take these steps the only part left is execution; this is that hardest (but most rewarding) step by far. There is nothing like achieving your one version of success and you owe it to yourself to live in a way that is uniquely true to you. I hope you all find to the courage to know yourself and take action toward the life you deserve.
Think Well. Achieve More. Live Better.
