On the path to greatness chances are that you will run into people who do not share the same drive to achieve as you do. It is important to respect those people’s points of view… because let’s be honest, success isn’t for everyone; just be prepared for the majority to not extend the same courtesy. Some people will try, do and say all sorts of things to discourage you from striving for success. It is not that they are bad people… you just want different things out of life. While this is a common phenomenon that most successful thinkers are faced with at some point, it typically is an indication that you are doing something right. When put in these situations it is important to put your head down and stay the course; because the temporary pain of unpopularity pales in comparison to the lifelong sting of regret. Below you will find some of the common phrases you will come across along the way:
You Are Just A Showoff
If they consider self-improvement and positive thinking as over the top activities that only “showoffs” participate in…then yes…I suppose you are a showoff. Since when is going above and beyond to improve yourself and your future ever been a bad thing? I am convinced that most people would consider this…like …. a good thing? If you ever hear this just know that your actions do not involve them nor were you executing them with anyone else in mind; therefore, their opinion should not sway your decision to continue on. This phrase says much more about the one saying it than the person the comment is directed at.
Are You Trying to Make Me Look Bad?
The truth is, you are not trying to make them “look" like anything. This phrase indicates that you are trying to portray them in a negative light by performing well. I don’t know about you but when I perform well it has never been with the intention to spite someone else. The person who tells you this needs to rephrase their comment to “Am I trying to make me look bad?”. There is no reason why you should have to shoulder the responsibility of how the world views this person’s reputation; they are an adult and you have enough to worry about.
Slow Down…Don’t Work Too Hard
We all should strive to live a balanced life… so in that respect there is merit in this comment. However, if this phrase is said in the context of slowing down progress because you are progressing too fast than I would suggest you disregard it. This is a more subtle way of saying “Slow down… you are making me look bad”. The person tell you this has THEIR best interest in mind, NOT YOURS. Work as fast as you prefer to work and they can continue at their pace. If you standout, so be it.
If you want to be average, act average. If you want to be exceptional you must put in exception effort. These actions may draw both positive and negative attention… but only listen to the positive. Positive thoughts are the precursor to positive results.
Think Well. Achieve More. Live Better.
