Yes, I always say I'm more tears than a person, but this time I'm right, the fact of remembering this series makes me want to cry again, and I'll tell you all the reasons, because I can and because I don't mind giving you spoilers, this review is going to be more of a catharsis than anything else, which I don't mind either, because that's just me, jum.
Kotaro lives alone will be about Kotaro, a 4-year-old boy who moves into apartment 203 of a set of rooms, where he will have as neighbors Karino Shin, a manga artist; Akimoto Mizuki, a woman who works in a brothel, and Tamaru Isamu, a man who looks like a mobster; all of them will start to live together with Kotaro Sato, becoming part of his daily routine, and without thinking much, part of his life from the moment they meet.
This series made me cry every episode, every episode, and when I thought I wasn't going to cry anymore, I would cry more because I didn't expect it. how awful! I love it. This is a simple, very simple series, which this review will not honor, just because of how amazing and wonderful it can be, which it is, better said, it's just hard to recognize it.
Yes, Kotaro, a 4-year-old boy, lives alone, and from the first moment it was something that made a big impression on me, and for that reason I watched it, I needed to understand why, and together with his neighbors I got to know the whole story of Kotaro, that although he is only 4 years old, it is very long and suffering. I don't know if I should make spoilers or not, well, in the following paragraphs I will.
There is no one better than a child to teach many adults how to live decently, Kotaro will have that job with Karino, he will teach him from bathing every day, to the fact of eating healthy, and that organization should never be left aside when doing anything, but above all, to have empathy and put himself in the place of others.
You have to have too much empathy to watch this series, too much sensitivity, and too much emotional intelligence, because the topics that are going to be touched will be very sensitive, and just as they can awaken many traumas, they can be very difficult topics to talk about with children. Family abandonment is more than present in this series, and that is why we see it, to know why Kotaro does not live with his mom and dad, and from there we will be given small doses of a cruel and current reality that many children live in abusive families.
Okay, these two paragraphs will be spoilers only, so don't read them if you don't want to. Now I am going to give you the reasons why I cried too much watching Kotaro. The level of traumas that Kotaro has are very deep and as we get to know them the only thing that provokes them is to cry hugging him even though it won't solve anything, but just to let him know that he is not alone, and that's the most important thing in the series, Kotaro learns at some point that he is not alone.
Every time Kotaro smiled it made me want to cry because they were very few, and in fact, there is a chapter where he says he doesn't smile because it rarely provokes him, and many times he does it just to trick people into leaving him alone no matter that everything is wrong, I mean, a 4-year-old doing that, fuck no, it hurts a lot.
I decided to give you just one spoiler, I think, and that is the fact that his father is someone violent who physically hurts Kotaro, so he was put in an orphanage, and then he decided to go live alone because his father found out where he was and was always going to look for him, violently threatening everyone, making Kotaro relive again and again the abuse he lived with him; all that started when Kotaro's mother left and abandoned them, Kotaro blames himself for that and it's something I can't stand, he's already crying again remembering everything.
I want to tell you more, but I don't dare, this series is full of so many details that the first time means nothing, but then we understand how giant it is, how important it is for Kotaro, the trauma behind it, what it means, and how we wish things were different, because no child, not even in an animated series like this, should experience, or have in mind what it means to survive eating wet wipes, and that's just an example of what we will see.
You'll love Kotaro, he's the cutest little thing ever, but you'll wish a thousand times that he didn't experience any of what he did. There you have the trailer, and I completely understand that's the way it is, not much can be said, not much should be said. I missed a lot of things to say here, but I don't want to write more, bye.
