''Great Depression Cooking with Clara'' - Christopher Cannucciari got his 91 year old grandmother to make videos of how her family survived The Great Depression. She did this by demonstrating how her mother cooked with what they had available to eat. Because of resourcefulness, they never went hungry, in fact, they ate very well. While cooking, she shares stories - about their family life, how resources were stretched, how she and her brother grew up in these conditions.
Her father did not have a regular job, but he would go out every day and come home with something. A story I remember is when she was older and got a job to help support her family. She roller skated 4 miles to get to work. She carried a knife with her so that on her way home, if she saw any edible weeds, like dandelions, she would cut them and bring them home for her mother to use in meals.
If you didn't have a grandmother to pass on old recipes, family stories, and a lot of wisdom; watching Clara is the next best thing. No matter if this isn't what you would get from your own grandmother, this is a wonderful substitute. You probably would like to have a grandmother like Clara.
She's gone now. She passed in 2013 at the age of 98. She is preserved in her youtube videos and a book with recipes and stories.
With the way things are going in the world, we might need them.
Thanks, Clara, that you can still help.
