No estamos solos.

Consideration and respect in the digital age

You've probably heard the saying '...polite but not lacking in courage...' which I accept without objections, and regret that it goes against the arrival of crowds. Perhaps it has become worn down under the guise of individual insecurity and fear of being accused if you exercise any act of kindness towards someone in need on the street. Although I don't have statistics on this, I infer that few will stop to help someone who has fallen to avoid the effects of any potential investigation by law enforcement, or simply because they don't want to waste their valuable time. Well, time is equal for everyone, but they just don't want to lend attention outside of their interests.

Please excuse this introductory digression, but tell me, how many good mornings do you receive daily when you go out onto the street in your neighborhood? I understand that on busy streets, where hundreds of strangers pass by, greeting everyone becomes absurd. However, how many recognizable faces remain focused on their devices or with lost gazes as they enter the elevator of their building, or in a usual spot like a bakery. In conclusion, they opt to ignore them.

So, it's no surprise that in private communications (in electronic messaging) there are those who don't even bother to respond in a courteous tone, because they consider it superfluous and unnecessary. Even some people won't even take the trouble to respond directly, despite having hundreds of emojis created for such purposes, and which are accepted by most under the premise that an image says more than a thousand words, if writing is difficult for them. Perhaps they're not interested, or in the best case, this person is absorbed in their own existence, believing themselves, conscious or not, to be at the center of the universe. We are not alone.

In any case, you can't change people's behavior like that. Maybe, one identifies (like a mirror) what bothers them in another person, and without being perfectly aware, practices it. It comes to my mind the sentence "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Well, it's easier to say: treat your neighbor as you would want them to treat you. Who knows if it spreads through what they now call good vibes!

If you encounter someone who is rude and indifferent and doesn't respond directly to messages, don't get angry. On the contrary, assume a compassionate and respectful attitude. First, review yourself. Be prudent and wise. However, one must still relate to others, as we are social beings by nature, so regarding the indifferent person, consider the following:

  • Don't blame the other person for being indifferent due to lack of response. Although it's also convenient to avoid indulgence without foundation or pretenses that justify it, such as: they're going through a difficult time, have personal problems, haven't read the messages. In the end, facts define intentions.
  • Maintain your self-esteem. Sometimes one feels affected, but when determining with certainty the indifference of the other person. Remember that their response (or lack thereof) doesn't define you. You have an intrinsic value and the freedom to conduct yourself for good or ill. Feel good about yourself, and strive whatever about life.
  • Priorize your interests and focus your attention towards healthy life. Then after your self-reflection and making peace with yourself, follow your path. No one is obligated to maintain a relationship with someone who has divergent interests where you don't fit in. Learn from the experience, comparing your values. Ditch what no longer serves you, and highlight what really determines you as a better person. In that sense, move forward without regret for the indifferent person. It's very likely that they don'not even exist, so it's best to adopt a compassionate but just attitude: a beneficial feeling for your own soul.

One final thought I'm convinced of: it's healthy to be courteous in any situation; even if not reciprocated. Don't worry if the other person doesn't respond with good morning or doesn't answer a message or phone call. You're not who loses dignity. It takes courage to act with good will, showing respect and consideration for others without worrying about their social status, nationality, or skin color; since we all come from the same origin, making us brothers, and for that matter, we'll all share the same destiny.
