Pakistan is set to emerge as the first country in South Asia to introduce 5G internet services, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) said in its annual report.
According to a Tribune report, a rapidly growing digital country will even defeat India in the future by introducing the most advanced Internet services.
Pakistan plans to launch 5G technology by 2020 and preparations begin to test 5G mobile connectivity, the first in South Asia, as quoted from the annual report for 2017.
The country's mobile network has reached more than 87 percent of the population, of which 70 percent is covered by 3G services while 30 percent can access 4G LTE services.
According to the news report, the federal cabinet allowed cellular companies to test 5G technology in Pakistan a few months ago in an existing regulatory environment without charging users.
Network and cellular companies carry out laboratory and field trials to prepare to launch technology when ready.
Internet and broadband services spread to every corner of the country, boosting demand for international and national connectivity. In fact, international internet bandwidth also increases regularly.
Data Security and Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) is also an important issue for Pakistan because of its geo-political interests. In this case, PTA is preparing implementation guidance by telecommunication license holder. [Al Arabiya]
