Normally I post the solutions directly under my chess puzzles, but since this proved to be really difficult and complex, I decided to dedicate it a complete new article plus DTube video.

Here again the starting position, in which white should checkmate in 17 moves at the latest:

White begins by castling king's side, threatening the black king with a fatal discovered check.

We now consider a) 1. ... Kf7 and b) 1. ... Kf5. After 1. ... e4 wins 2. Ng4#, and after 1. ... g4 wins 2. ... Ne4#.

a)

1. 0-0! Kf7
2. Rc8! Bg3
3. Ng4+ Bf4
4. Nxe5+ Kf6
5. d4! Kf5
6. g4+ Ke4
7. Re1+ Kxd4
8. Nf3+ Kd3
9. Rc3# checkmate.

Weiß beginnt mit der kurzen Rochade, wodurch dem schwarzen König ein fatales Abszugsschach droht.

Wir betrachten nun a) 1. ... Kf7 und b) 1. ... Kf5. Nach 1. ... e4 gewinnt 2. Sg4#, und nach 1. ... g4 gewinnt 2. Se4#.

4. Sxe5+ Kf6
5. d4! Kf5

Again, black has two choices: the obvious b1) 2. ... Kg4 and the surprisingly more promising b2) Bf2+!?.

5. Rc8! Kh7 Rh8# has to be prevented.

After 8. Kxf2 Nxd3+ it lasts significantly longer until checkmate, and after 8. Kg2 actually black wins!

Wieder hat Schwarz zwei Möglichkeiten: Das naheliegende b1) 2. ... Kg4 und das überraschenderweise erfolgversprechendere b2) Lf2+!?.

4. g4+ Kh6
5. Tc8! Kh7 Th8# muss verhindert werden.
