Hazel lived happily with her family in a small up-country town. When she was sixteen she wanted to go to the next town with her boyfriend, Ronald for his cousin's 18th birthday celebration party at the week-end. At first her parents refused permission, but when Ronald's Aunt Maggie phoned to repeat the invitation, and said she could sleep over, they reluctantly agreed.
Ronald had just gotten his driver's licence and had a car. Hazel packed her overnight bag and set off with Ronald on Saturday afternoon. You can guess what happened next. When she got home the next morning she didn't know how to explain what had happened, so she said nothing. Three weeks later she knew she was pregnant and also that she and Reginald would never be good together. And still she said nothing. Imagine this young girl, frightened by the changes going on in her body, powerless to stop them; ( she had ' stomach flu' for 2 weeks) and no-one to talk to. Well, she got fatter, her parents nagged her to do some exercise and lose weight, but nothing helped.
At last her Mother took her to the Doctor and then it all came out, the party, all the long months since, the fear and helplessness. It was decided to give the baby up for adoption. Three days later she went into labour and had a little girl, who was adopted.
Hazel finished school and had normal life, a career, marriage and children. She always thought of her daughter on her birthday. Eighteen years after the birth of that little girl Hazel received a phone call from the adoptive Father and he said her daughter, Esther would like to meet her. Hazel was scared, but agreed. They met at a restaurant that had tables outside, where they could talk with more privacy. There was a lot of emotional tears, and they couldn't stop talking.
Esther is special, she has two mothers. Hazel now gets to phone Esther on her birthday.
