I've visited a lot of poor places around the world where animal protein is usually eaten only on special occasions; mainly because it is just too expensive for the locals to consume regularly.
Whenever it is available, they always stretched out the protein with at least 2 X amounts of vegetables.
I guess this is a situation where the cost of food results in a healthier meal - instead of the more common scenario: "higher cost = higher public prestige, higher % of animal protein, and higher Kcal count".
Imagine That?
Enjoyed your post.
