The masks epitomize the American addiction to security theater in lieu of actual security. It gives a false sense of action and proactivity.
On the one hand, wearing a mask is a visual signal that someone is making an effort. On the other hands, masks that do not work, or are worn incorrectly, make the world more dangerous if there are virus-bearing asymptomatic or presymptomatic people in public spreading a virus.
The library will be mandating masks whenever we deliver books outside for curbside pickup. It's nonsense, but at least they pay me to participate in the nonsense.
