When did you first get into tabletop wargames or RPGs?

It must have been summer of 2010. I realized I was dealing with some potentially serious depression from losing my architectural drafting job from the recent recession, and then having to work at a miserable call center. I needed social interaction and escapism. The Friendly Local Game Shop had a weekly WOTC-sanctioned Encounters event, so I started during the era of The Edition Which Shall Not Be Named.

What first attracted you?

I wanted to find a structured social activity where I could exercise my imagination. Plus, Encounters events are free, and the location was convenient.

Which games do you play?

RPGs: D&D 5E & Genesys. I also have books for Savage Worlds, Warhammer Fantasy, Through the Breach (the Malifaux RPG), D&D 3.5, and probably one or two more.

War games: Warhammer 40,000, although that's on hold for now due to some irritation with Games Workshop. Orks and Necrons are my favored factions. I also have books for Maelstrom's Edge and several scales of Mantic's war games.

Which games WON'T you play?

I don't have much interest in Vampire: The Masquerade. It's not a hard no, but I would need some serious persuasion and a good game group to bother trying at all.

Do you play in person? Online?

In person. The internet here is horrible. Online doesn't work.

RPG Player, DM, both? Neither?

Both. I DM at my library and occasional friends games. I play in two weekly games.

Casual, competitive, or never wargamer?

Casual for sure, I can't afford the time or money to chase the meta!

Do you also collect and paint miniatures?

Yup, although I need a dedicated painting space again.

Do you craft terrain?

Definitely.

Do you 3D print miniatures, terrain or bits?

I have dabbled in it, but not very seriously. I would need a resin printer to make miniatures with anything resembling acceptable quality.

Has anyone on Hive been particularly helpful?

Nope.

What would you say to someone interested in getting into tabletop for the first time?

Find an RPG group or FLGS game night. You don't even need to invest in dice to give it a try. Skirmish games like Malifaux, Infinity, or Kill Team are a good entry for tabletop war games because you don't need a huge army. Just buy a box and a rule book.
