This isn't new. Women attempt suicide more often than men, but it seems more like this is often a performance to cry for help by extreme means, because they do not succeed as often as men, who seem to often decide, "nope, I'm out" and act on it very effectively. There is also very little mental health support for men despite lots of lip service, and seeking help can have punitive effects whether intended or not.

Many of the "gun death" statistics in the US are suicides. This is sometimes cited as furtehr evidence guns need to be banned to prevent acts of desperation. However, the US does not have an overall suicide rate higher than other countries, and it's not like poisons, drugs (hello again, fentanyl) asphyxiation, knives, high places, railroad crossings, etc. would go away even if all guns could be removed magically.

Tangential note: I had the misfortune to see the aftermath of a train vs. pedestrian collision many years ago. It was a double track. The near train passed, and another oncoming train on the far track was out of sight. Instead of waiting for a clear view, the pedestrian immediately started across when the near train cleared the path, and walked straight into the afterlife as a consequence. This was an accident, not a suicide as far as I know, but family connections to the railroad industry suggest this is an all-too-common tragedy engineers are forced to witness from the cab, helpless to stop or swerve thanks to physics, whether the death is deliberate or accidental.
