People may mock American mass-produced beers, but many microbreweries are releasing IPAs at 8-9% ABV, and a pint is definitely plenty at that point! I can't say I've ever had a French beer, but crossing the channel is easier than crossing the entire Atlantic and then the whole continent to reach me. Maybe one day.
