Another useful bit of advice occurred to me when I was looking at another post, so I commented there, added it to my own warning post, and am also copying it here.

Keep your tokens staked or in savings to protect them from immediate theft should your keys be compromised. Liquid HIVE/HBD will be taken immediately. Savings take 3 days to unlock, and staked HIVE releases at most 1/13th of your holdings after 7 days. This gives you time to secure your account, even if you can't remember right away where you stored that pesky Owner Key note.
