I always say in any emergency, you are the first responder. Sounds like you responded properly. Will you carry more first aid supplies on future hikes? A hiking guide who spoke at my library a few years ago kept his kit in a water bottle, because what keeps wet in will also keep wet out, and having a spare container isn't bad either.
