A mythological troll is a hostile creature who attacks passers by. To "troll" is also to go fishing while rowing, sailing, or motoring slowly across a lake with bait on a line. An internet troll is someone who adds nothing to conversations, and instead stirs up conflict with lies, empty accusations, and insults. And then there's the troll doll fad which became a recent series of animated films.

Describing and condemning trollish spam is not trolling. Poking fun at trolls is not itself necessarily trolling, although I suppose you could argue lighthearted mockery by memes, limericks, and haiku is approaching that line. Downvoting spam and other abusive behavior is absolutely not trolling, though.
