When I offered preparedness classes and Altoids tin emergency kits at the library, I encouraged people to just wrap a needle or two in thread so they would have a quick fix solution that takes up basically zero space or weight. It can even be pre-threaded through the eye so you aren't adding that struggle to a situation.
