Dark matter and dark energy are peculiar placeholders, but Newtonian physics has been refined by Einstein's theories, which have apparently passed muster when tested. Science is a process of discovery, and should always be treated as such. I think of it as like a crossword puzzle in progress, in that there are solutions where you are reasonably certain, some that are in question, and some that are unknown but waiting for clues to fill out. Dark matter would be one of those placeholders used to see whether it helps fill in other empty lines or not. Same with string theory.

How "wildly divergent" are these measurements? Fractions of a percent, right? And what basis was used to postulate singularities, and how can the postulate be tested? Sounds like a "because I said so" instance to me. Good science isn't about, "because I said so," even though it is such a dense body of knowledge that we tend to rely on those with narrow expertise.

Yes, there are a lot of absurd ideas taught in school. That is a real problem. Hell, Keynesian economics is a huge barrier to progress, and that is deemed concrete fact. The State has claimed the role of a god in society, and that is the core of most government school curricula starting with the flag prayer in the morning. That is a real issue. But that doesn't falsify the later classes in mathematics.
