A patent is a public release of an invention alongside a claim of authorship, not a method of keeping a secret. And we now have the MIT license, Creative Commons, the GNU GPL, and other methods of releasing "intellectual property" into the public domain or at least as a sort of open source option. The Internet is very hard to scrub, especially with blockchains like ours.
