Napping too long, Warmer weather, Making flower pots, A new soil harvesting spot & Planting more seeds!
Alright, I am begining the writing for this entry at the exact same time that I started doing it last night... so I guess my plan to begin earlier in the evening did not work out as intended. Perhaps tomorrow I will not oversleep during my late afternoon nap... and can get to working on the day's entry at a much earlier hour.
I guess that I will have to keep being patient with myself as I get into the new writing routine... and not get too aggravated about 'missing my mark' with it all. It is worth noting that I did manage to work on that fictional material throughout the day... so at least I stayed on track with that aspect of things.
Overall, today was another mildly productive day where I mainly continued my gardening efforts... and did my best to get my routine chores done early in the day. With how warm that the weather has been, it has been rather easy to get outdoors early... and make good use of my time during the cooler part of the day.
Anyways, I wound up pillaging another bag of the plastic water jugs (that I have stored in that tent) to use some of the jugs as flower pots. This time around (when making the pots) I only made ten of them because I was already running low on space for new pots on top of the chicken coop... which is the only safe place that I currently have to put them.
In an effort to avoid the roots that I mentioned in yesterday's entry, I found a new spot in the gulch to gather topsoil from... and thankfully I found some good soil that was not too far away downhill. I actually wound up harvesting the soil from the foot of the embankment (near the outdoor shower) where my walking up and down the bank had caused a good bit of erosion over the last six hundred odd days.
Basically, there was a heck of a lot of good soil that had collected in that area... and it looks like much better soil than what I was getting from that other area since it did not have as much bark, sticks and leaves in it. As a side note, I should start marking the flower pots with the location that I get the soil from... so I can tell which one does better.
While getting the soil, I was also able to create a nice flat walking path along the base of the embankment (at the bottom of the gulch) so now when I walk down the bank there the transition is a wee bit smoother. The new 'path' does not lead fully to the entrance of the shower... but as I continue gathering more soil from the area I am hoping to achieve just that.
Once I got all the new flower pots filled with soil, I went ahead and planted them all with the remaining squash seeds that I had... which turned out to be eleven seeds so I just double planted one of the pots. Since the new soil was even more damp than the other soil that I have been using, I once again skipped watering any of the pots after planting seeds in them... and am still counting on (hoping for) some rain to water them for me.
After getting the new pots stacked on top of the chicken coop, I noticed that I had a wee bit more space available... and decided to make some more pots and get a few more things potted. Instead of getting more jugs from the tent, I wound up repurposing some already cut down jugs that I had previously used for storing ashes in.
In those pots (there were only four or five of them) I wound up planting some pumpkin seeds... and in one of them I planted an onion (from my food supply) that had sprouted a bunch of greenery. I am not sure how well that the onion will do... but I put it in the tallest flower pot that I had... along with some of the 'blackest dirt' that I had collected all day.
By and large I am pretty happy with my gardening efforts for the year thus far, even though I have yet to get any black locust seeds planted. While I was piddling around with stuff today, I realized that I should plan on planting black locust seeds in any of the new planted pots whose vegetable seeds do not wind up growing.
Another thing that I realized, is that I might be able to build some 'shelves' on the exterior of the dog yard where I (horizontially) marriaged two pieces of fencing together to make the overall fence height taller. The main section where I am thinking of doing that at, is between the chicken coop and the dog yard gate which could accomodate something like a four meter long shelf.
The best part of that potential shelf setup, is that it might not only get better sun than the coop does... but it would also make watering the plants rather easy. My only real concern if I build a shelf there, is it will make navigating the adjacent trail a bit precarious... because I will have to shift the trail to the very edge of the gulch that borders the dog yard.
