So as we all know,2017 was a breakthrough year for the nollywood industry in the cinema, lots of high quality and high budget movies were made. The most notable being the wedding party 2 which as at 3rd of January had grossed a mouth watering 312 million Naira breaking box office records not just in Nigeria but also in the UK. The movie has been such a hit with fans that tickets are sold as high are three thousand naira and the frenzy attached to purchasing of tickets it's in it side another movie that would crack you up.
Nollywood movies got major screening time at the theaters in 2017,a lot of movies were dashed out. And without any doubt this movies were on point with their casting, location, sound and visual quality but unfortunately the scripting were overly underwhelming. Most movies had only beautiful locations and outfits to offer their viewers, Nollywood has gradually become an industry with a phobia of investing in original movies or genres. Why gamble on an original script that audiences may or may not accept when you can just stick to genres and concepts that have been successful. Most movies were based on the same ideology but executed with different actors and given different names. Most movies lacked genuine genius touch, it was clear themes were heavily borrowed and producers were scared of walking on fresh waters for fear of making a movie that would be a cinematic flop. Movies like Isoken, banana island ghost, ojukokoro, slow country and a few others stood out and were worth the hype but others should have been just been made straight to dvd's(home videos).
On a lighter note, Nollywood movies has greatly improved in terms of quality in 2017 and it would only get better in 2018 but as a lover of movies, I mean good movies I'd love to see something different next time I visit the cinema, the scripting of movies is a major problem that needs urgent attention. The norm no longer works, producers and directors should stretch their thoughts on how to add more intriguing features to our movies. Because I think Nollywood is at a good place right now and we have to grab this opportunity with both hands.I bet if we improve our quality of movie in terms of scripting and theme our movies would get more international recognition and even nominations.
Rushed productions is also another thing I expect the Nollywood industry to work on in 2018. In our sister industry Hollywood, a movie production could run up to three years or even more and when it is finally released, it's usually a masters piece but sadly I can't say this of the Nollywood industry and hopefully in 2018 we would take more time in producing instead of rushing and serving half baked movies.
In general I'm expecting good quality movies with proper writing and top class acting in 2018 .In retrospect 2017 was a breakthrough year that offered a whole lot to the industry, I sincerely hope 2018 would offer more and do so with more class.
