I found this nice little cross outside my dorm at the end of summer. I'd like to say I was out exploring the area in search of cool things and new places to hang out, but in reality I was just looking for the dumpster and had ended up behind some large machine outside my building. Sitting there in the gravel in this little brick corner was the hand made wooden cross pictured above. I saw it and thought, "Wow, this could be a nice hand-made tribute to the life of a pet, or a person. I should leave this alone not only out of respect for whomever Maddie may be, but also out of fear for the bad karma or juju or whatever negative spirits/side-effects could come with taking this cross from its resting place."
I brought my friend over to show her what I had found, and she said "Oh wow! That would look cool outside my door!"
That is why the cross is pictured about on top of the lever for a fire alarm. I personally think that Maddie's possible grave marker should be left where we found it, but my friend is adamant that Maddie's spirit is protecting her at night from bad dreams and demons alike.
I'm not quite sure this cross brings anyone any kind of good or bad luck, but I did think it was a very interesting find. I often wonder if Maddie was someone's pet fish or dog or hamster, or if she was a person that was somehow connected to this place. I found the cross in a pretty obscure place so it is highly unlikely that a human was buried under it. The ground where it was was not exactly favorable for digging anyway, so its honestly more likely that this was either some kind of joke or that this is just a simple tribute to a lost friend.
Maddie, if you or your ghost is out there reading this, thanks for lending us your (possible) tombstone. I will probably return it at some point in time, but for the time being, thanks for the great conversation piece.
