Just recently I was asked by a person from the USA about what I recommend as far as "What to own? for self defence (although that is a broad topic), I suggested the following:

AR15
Glock 19
Ruger Mark IV 22/45 lite
Ruger 10/22 takedown (with the Magpul backpack kit).

Justification:
all 3 of the ammo are available anywhere in The USA.
The list covers almost all basic needs (depending on the situation)
Maintenance is minimal.
Reliability is proven.
Costs of ammo are minute compared to most other ammo out there on the market.

So yeah, when asked, I think about the answer and justify it.
Although I did have to sleep on this one, as the person asking is "new" to it all and would probably be lead down the rabbit hole of acquiring firearms that would break the budget and not be effective in a SHTF situation.

Unfortunately, I am not a mind reader.
