This doesn't happen so often in Chiang Mai because i've been told the Army has more control over this city and there is a big military base here. For some reason this results in the police actually doing their jobs and not allowing taxi mafias and people simply taking over the street and claiming no one else can use it.

I have heard about things like you describe but we don't really have that here. There is a taxi mafia of sorts but it might be mostly dead. When Grab first appeared on the scene the taxi drivers here made their own signs saying that Uber and Grab are illegal and there would be stories of them assaulting Grab drivers to try to intimidate other drivers from providing Grab service. I don't think they were very successful.

The shitty thins is that the reason why the taxi drivers try to do this is so that they can continue to rip people, mostly tourists, off.
