Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, a holy month and a month of fasting for all capable Muslims.
It is the month in which the Holy Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Mohammed according to Islamic Religious Believe. Fasting during this month, which is observed annually by Muslims is considered one of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory for all capable Muslim adults ( except the sick, the aged, the traveling, pregnant or menstruating women and generally, any condition that makes one incapable of fasting). It usually begins upon the sighting of the crescent moon. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, within which they are expected to refrain from eating food, drinking fluids, smoking or indulging in sexual activity. Also, certain sinful acts such as backbiting, lying, fighting, insulting etc are considered to reduce the reward and quality of one's fast.
