For small public blockchains, it might be possible to rent services such as NiceHash to setup a 51% attack, for only a few hundred thousand USD (Figure 1).
51% attacks can be very profitable, as for the May 2018 attach on Bitcoin Gold, with $18 Millions being stolen (figure 1.1) in a single attack.
