Animals that literally explode to kill their enemies and save their brothers

The species of ants from southeast Asia living on trees has an explosive defensive tactic - they destroy their enemies by blowing themselves up and covering the intruders with poisonous mucus.

Exploiting ants are most commonly classified in the species called Colobopsis cylindrical, but scientists have recently discovered that there are at least 15 species of these sacrificial insects, including a completely new species discovered in Borneo.

The new type of ants, Colobopsis explodens, was formerly referred to as a 'yellow blend' by the light-colored glittering substance produced by exploding ants workers. Their colonies contain thousands of ants, inhabiting leafy tree trunks growing up to 60 meters in height and covering an area of at least 2,500 square feet. Scientists have decided to do the C. explodens type model, i.e. the one they will observe to make conclusions about the larger group, in this case, the explosive ants. They noticed that C. exploded ants "were especially inclined to self-sacrifice" in the presence of the threat, which they assigned to the scientists as well.

Such strange head shapes create the perfect ants that the ants use to temporarily block openings into their nest, scientists wrote.
